The Athens Cultural Center is proud to announce our milestone 15th Annual Members Exhibition opening Saturday, April 14th. From our fledgling members show in 2003, this yearly exhibition has grown and flourished, showcasing the exciting work of emerging and established Hudson Valley artists in our beautiful turn of the century former mercantile space. The work of over 30 artists, ranging from watercolors, oils, pastels, pencil and ink on paper, photographs, ceramics, image transfer, and more, highlights the diversity of their creativity.
During the opening reception, April 14th from 6-8 PM, four awards will be presented: the Directors Award, a cash prize of $100; the Curators Choice Award, a Solo Exhibition in the Glass Gallery during the 2019 Members Show; Best Landscape in Show and Best in Show Awards, each receiving a one year Individual ACC Membership.
In the Glass Gallery, the 2017 Curator’s Choice Award winner, Tina Chaden, has a solo exhibition, “light & found, sculpture in partnership with nature”. In collaboration with nature, this Hudson Valley artist creates sculptures reflecting the beauty and ingenuity of the natural world. Her installation “light & found” will surround you with whimsical, glowing organic forms born out of sumptuous woodland textures and intriguing construction techniques.
Speaking about her work Ms. Chaden states, “My frequent walks in the woods, along the banks of the Hudson River and hikes in the Catskill Mountains provide me with an abundance of raw material. All my designs take cues from these miraculous found objects. I’m constantly amazed and inspired by nature’s processes, the layering of birchbark, the obsessive weavings of paper wasps or the water-worn driftwood intricately etched by insects. There is so much elegance and grace in these natural forms I merely follow their lead and present them in the best possible light.”
Tina Chaden is an award-winning multimedia artist. Her artwork has appeared in galleries and museums across the country, as well as a Smithsonian International Traveling Exhibition and a Whitney Museum of Art window installation. In addition to her work in the fine arts, Ms. Chaden is also a graphic designer, photo stylist, digital photographer and illustrator whose clients have included major magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens, Time, and Discover. Her versatility and wide-ranging talents have also led her to cultivate a Conservancy garden, collect and sell vintage modern design and to produce and direct documentary videos on theater arts. Ms. Chaden is a native Chicagoan who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She resides in Upstate New York where she has restored an 1867 row house that serves as living quarters, Airbnb and art studio.
The ACC gallery is located at 24 Second Street, Athens and the exhibition, co-curated by Lucy Michener and Diane Michener, runs through May 12th, with hours Friday, 4-7 pm; Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4 pm or by appointment by emailing email@example.com.
