POP-UP WEDNESDAYS ARE BACK at the ATHENS CULTURAL CENTER. World famous and local artist Ruby Silvious will join us and instruct our first fall class “Reclaimed Canvas Workshop.” WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 9th from 6:00p.m-8:00p.m.  Ruby Silvious will lead you through-experimental painting on unusual materials. You will have an opportunity to see her new book, Reclaimed Canvas, and inspiring examples to help get you started. You will work on eggshell shards, and used tea bags. SEEING IT THROUGH IMAGE TRANSFER WORKSHOP with TINA CHADEN.

Class Description–Image transfer is an amazing technique enabling an artist to layer one transparent image over the other creating the depth and richness that has made Tina Chaden’s collages world renown. In this two workshops you will learn to create transparent pictures from any found material that can be placed on a laser color copier bed.Students will be instructed on how to combine simple painting and collage methods with basic image transfer techniques.  All labels of art making experience are encouraged to attend.

Description– Create beautiful artistic gifts for friends and family or treat yourself!  Popular instructor Kathy Klompas will return to lead you on an inspired and enthusiastic journey of printing and painting.  You’ll be thrilled to have created 2 unique hand painted silk scarves, and 2 tote bags printed with gelli plate printing techniques! You’ll also end up with lots of printed papers to use as cards, gift wrap, and collage materials.  VICTORIAN WINDOW PAINTING GROUP

Wednesdays- November thru December 11/6, 11/13, 11/20, 12/4, 12/11

 Community Group Project,  Cost– Free, Materials- Provided

Workshop Description– No experience needed!!! This group will work together to learn how to obtain temporary stained glass effects on windows, and how to enlarge a design through gridding.  We will work together to create Victorian Stained Glass Designs and enlarge and transfer them to the Cultural Center windows for the Victorian Stroll. Your artwork will be on display there for thousands of viewers.  This is a group undergoing! All ages are welcome! Please join me in providing the community with a warm, welcoming beautiful representation of this tradition!

Class Description- Remember the days of refrigerator art?  Now it’s your turn.No experience necessary! Using a wealth of materials you will create a series of small collages with magnetic backing to be used as gifts or for yourself. 

You may also create a unique book mark as well. These small pieces of art are standouts, by using color theory and composition tricks you will come up with your own mini masterpieces!

2019 FREE SUMMER ART CLASSES~FOR STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS 
13 & UP.

The Athens Cultural Center offers free student art classes throughout the year and free evening summer classes for 8th grade and up  July-August.

Summer Art Classes give students and other members of our community an opportunity to choose what types of classes they want to attend, while receiving guidance from trained artists in a fun and relaxed environment. Our summer evening art classes are free for students 8th grade and up and seniors.  $10.00 fee for all others. During the summer, students can spend one to six weeks at the Athens Cultural Center, painting, drawing, writing stories and creating sculptures.

WEEK 1: JULY 9TH & JULY 11TH

Delicate Mindful Musical Watercolors & Microns:

All levels are invited to come experiment with watercolors and learn about how to take inspiration from an artist by taking apart their work.  The students will work with Kandinsky and his delicate lines and how music inspired him. We’ll create our own meditative musically inspired compositions over free flowing watercolors. This is a super relaxing, mood altering class. (Instructor: Natalie Boburka )


WEEK 2: JULY 16TH & JULY 18TH

Landscape Painting:

Students will sketch outside and come in to the studio to paint their drawing with acrylic paints. Students will learn how to create the illusion of space to make a realistic painting. Students will learn and understand how to use basic color theory to complete their project. (Instructor: Wendy Doney)


WEEK 3: JULY 23RD & JULY 25 (SPECIAL SATURDAY JULY 27TH)

Meditative Pattern Based Design: This relaxing, meditative art experience is for anyone who loves to doodle! We’ll work on constructing individual patterns, and use them in a variety of structures, some with color added first and some with color added after.  You’ll leave this class with a number of small pieces and a higher level of relaxation and calmness

Saturday Special Session: 1:00pm-3:30pm

Group Pattern Based Design Hidden Figures: All participants from session #1 plus a guest if wanted.We’ll take what we learned and create a giant group design which you will make all the decisions about, from color, to what to use, and what to hide.  (Instructor: Natalie Boburka)


WEEK 4: JULY 30TH & AUGUST 1ST (SPECIAL SATURDAY AUGUST 3RD)

Site Specific Sculptures:

No experience necessary- all levels welcome! We’ll use Athens waterfront as inspiration to create Marquette’s to be used as a basis for larger site specific abstract sculptures using a variety of sculpture wire, wire mesh, wooden dowels, hot glue, spray paint, and metal tape.

Saturday Special Session:1:00pm-3:30pm

All participants from session #1 plus a guest if wanted. We’ll work together to create a flock of birds to perch on the gazebo at the riverfront! We’ll get a group picture and the birds will migrate to different places in Athens. (Instructor: Natalie Boburka)


WEEK 5: AUGUST 6TH & AUGUST 8TH

Found Art Poetry:  Students will create a poem based on the magazine article of their choice.  They will then learn the art of calligraphy which they will be able to apply to their artwork for a cohesive piece that combines art with poetry. (Instructor: Wendy Doney)

WEEK 6: AUGUST 13TH & AUGUST 15TH
