Pastels Part II: Studio Practice with ES DeSanna
Four Saturdays, June 30-July 21, 1-4 PM
Adults tuition: $125 plus $5 lab fee; ACC members $120 plus $5 lab fee; teens 15 or older freelo-stellino-copy-sue-desanna
This class addresses the principles of editing the landscape to compose a dynamic painting. In the studio, students will explore sketches and photographs for their compositional possibilities.
Students will apply composition, value, and color principles, while developing their own style with this medium. They will learn to create their own supports and be encouraged to try various methods of application. The workshop format is lecture/demo and individual help at easel.
Basic principles of working with pastels will be reinforced; new techniques will be explored and encouraged. For students with some painting or drawing experience.

E S DeSanna paints mostly landscapes en plein air. Pastel is her primary medium, the splendor of the Hudson Valley her sustaining inspiration. Wanderlust has often taken her to Europe, where she has painted in England and across northern and central Italy. Her work represents the beauty of nature, but often acknowledges a humalo-stellino-copy-sue-desannan presence with the occasional road, the distant village, or a patchwork of fields. Though she works in soft pastel, she applies her pigment thickly on a coarse ground, giving a painterly effect. She also translates her study of the landscape to print. She has long loved the spontaneous aspect of monotypes, and also enjoys more formal printmaking with relief and intaglio methods.

The artist has received awards for her work in both pastel and printmaking. Her work is in collections throughout the U.S. and in Europe. She earned a degree in art from SUNY New Paltz, and has studied at School of Visual Arts in NYC, Woodstock School of Art, Il Chiostro in Tuscany and West Dean College in England. She has taught pastel workshops for small groups around the Valley and in Italy, and currently offers classes in pastel privately, and at diverse venues in the region.
